Open source projects can only be as strong as their community.

The open source community is made up of a diverse group of individuals all at different experience levels. The Students of OpenInfra Series takes a look into universities and their approach to teaching open source in their curriculum.

Adarsh is currently in his first year of pursuing his Master Of Science in Computer Science from the University Of Delhi, India.

Check out how Adarsh got started working with Airship & OpenStack as a mentee for the Linux Foundation Mentorship Project.

What Open Infrastructure project are you working with and what made you interested in that project, as opposed to some of the other options?

In the VSperf project, I did log analysis and alerting. In this project, I also got access to Airship deployments, where I got to know about Openstack and Airship.

How did you get started?

I was selected as a mentee for Linux Foundation Mentorship Program.

What was the hardest part about getting started?

Apart from academics, you have to learn new things, like new technologies that are used in different projects. The second problem is that beginners must get familiar with the codebase.

What could have made the getting started process easier?

Attending different conferences or meetups, and learning about new technologies. Start open source contributions and attend the weekly meetings.

How have you contributed to the community?

I contributed to VSperf as an intern, I did log analysis and monitoring.

What’s the biggest benefit from your involvement?

  1. New skills set
  2. New connections
  3. Learn how to work in a team

What advice do you have for students who want to get started with open source?

Just don’t be afraid after seeing the code base. Mentors, or other members in the community, will help you. Start with the easy issues.
