Join the people building and operating open infrastructure at the inaugural Open Infrastructure Summit.  The Summit schedule features over 300 sessions organized by use cases including: artificial intelligence and machine learning, continuous integration and deployment, containers, edge computing, network functions virtualization, security and public, private and multi-cloud strategies.

In this post we’re highlighting some of the sessions you’ll want to add to your schedule about edge computing.  Check out all the sessions, workshops and lightning talks focusing on this topic here.

Far edge with virtual machines and containers

With both OpenStack and Kubernetes infrastructures like OpenShift, there are separate platforms for both VMs and containers. There are a couple of solutions, including to develop a unified platform would be to add container support into OpenStack or to add VMs to Kubernetes.

In this lightning talk, Red Hat’s Eric Lajoie, Timo Jokiaho and Bertrand Rault will share the use case for common open infrastructure with both VMs and containers plus how KubeVirt allows VMs to run in an existing k8s environment. Details here.

Precision Time Protocol (PTP) on StarlingX

StarlingX is a complete cloud infrastructure software stack for the edge used by the most demanding applications in industrial internet of things, telecom, video delivery and other ultra-low latency use cases. To meet the requirements of these use-cases, StarlingX has developed an integrated solution for supporting the IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) as the primary clock source to provide sub-microsecond accuracy to the application. This intermediate session with Alexander Kozyrev Matt Peters, both of Wind River Systems, offers a demo showing the PTP deployment architecture and demonstrate the clocking accuracy within StarlingX. Details here.

Kata Containers on edge cloud

Kata Containers wrap container workloads in extremely lightweight VMs which combine the speed and flexibility of containers with the isolation and security of VMs, makes it ideal candidates for multi-tenant deployments. In this session, Intel’s Yuntong Jin, Yu Bai and Zhiming Hu will show how to use Kata Containers to implement FaaS and the service will be deployed on edge side using a real-world case from the Baidu edge team. Details here.

Edge Computing Working Group update

The Edge Computing Working Group, formed a little over two years ago, continues to work on defining use cases, identifying project synergies and architecting a minimum viable product based on the previous done to define use cases. The panel will discuss what the group has accomplished and how it has been engaged with the larger OpenStack, open infrastructure and oOpen source communities over the past year and what we will be working on in the coming year. In addition to use cases, the session will touch on Keystone federation development to support edge use cases and Glance support for federated models. Details here.

Container networking at the edge with Kuryr

Running containerized micro-services at the network edge is quickly gaining popularity, but how can users provide networking to these containers?
Kuryr can provide the bridge between your Container Orchestration Engine (COE) and Neutron’s network abstraction layer, say Dell EMC’s David Paterson, Mark Beierl and Daniel Mellado. OpenStack already gives users the ability to deploy OpenStack compute nodes to the edge via Nova’s existing availability zones functionality. Kuryr allows users to leverage the existing Neutron network layer between the Central Data Center (CDC) control plane and the remote compute node. Details here.
