Spotlight On: The OpenStack User Survey

Over 15 million cores of OpenStack are run in production. How do we know this? The OpenStack User Survey – and it’s open right now! 

If you (or your customers!) are testing, running or evaluating OpenStack, please take 20 minutes to complete the user survey.  

The deadline to take the OpenStack User Survey is coming up quickly: August 20. You can check out the results of previous surveys here.

This is your annual opportunity to provide feedback to the upstream community, so the developers can better understand OpenStack environments and software requirements. Your anonymized feedback is shared with the project teams so we can improve how the community and project provide value to you.

The survey will take less than 20 minutes. If you have taken the user survey before, you just need to login and update your profile.

Airship: Elevate your infrastructure

  • Technical Committee elections are this month! The nomination period is August 16 -22, and voting will take place August 23 – 29. Read the full announcement.

Kata Containers: The speed of containers, the security of VMs

  • Kata-Containers 2.2.0-alpha1 is out
  • Check out how companies use Kata.
    • Last month on OpenInfra Live, the #KataContainers community hosted community members from AMD, Ant Group, Apple, IBM, and Huawei to share how they’re running Kata. Kata Containers Architecture Committee members and upstream contributors also provided an update on community development and the project roadmap. Watch the full episode on YouTube!
  • Take your Kata user survey or help us to update it!
    • The Kata survey is the community’s opportunity to get some direct feedback from users on Kata’s general direction and perception. The community is updating the survey to make sure that it’s useful and meaningful for users and us. Learn more on how you can contribute to the user survey here.

OpenInfra Labs: Connecting open source projects to production

  • The Telemetry Working Group held their August meeting on Tuesday, with presentations and discussions covering dynamic tracing and leveraging machine learning to mine application logs for failure analysis. The recording should be available to stream on their playlist soon. If you’d like to attend, these meetings are held monthly and open to everyone.
  • Dr. Hui Lei published a status update for Project Caerus this week, on progress toward its goals for optimizing the performance of disaggregated data lakes. Interested in helping out? You can find Project Caerus right alongside the other OpenInfra Labs development efforts.

OpenStack: Open source software for creating private and public clouds

  • Announcing the ‘Y’ release name- OpenStack Yoga! OpenStack’s 25th release name was announced after the usual nominations and voting periods.
  • Yoga release goals selection process is also underway. As we approach Milestone 3, we are in the ‘defining potential goals’ phase before final selection. We are looking for help reviewing proposals once they are drafted and goal champions to help draft them
  • Since the last round of technical elections we held in April, the Condorcet Internet Voting Service (CIVS) has made changes to their policies and now require those interested in voting in a poll run their site to opt in to their voting system. If you do not do this, you will not receive a ballot even if you are an eligible part of the electorate. Please make sure to use the email address you have supplied in Gerrit if you chose to opt in which can be done here on their site. Technical elections nominations are coming up August 17th at 23:45 UTC, so please opt in soon if you are a valid member of the electorate and interested in voting.

StarlingX: A fully featured cloud for the distributed edge

  • If you are running or evaluating StarlingX please fill out a short survey and help the community better understand how the platform is used. 
  • The community has been working on adding support for Debian in the platform. You can check out the spec to learn more about the plans and tasks. It is also a great item to get involved and help the community to finish this work item faster
  • The third and final segment of the Precision Time Protocol (PTP) blog post series has been published recently. If you need PTP for your edge use case download and check out StarlingX 5.0 and take advantage of the notification framework that the community added in that release.

Zuul: Stop merging broken code

  • The Nodepool 4.2.0, 4.2.1, and 4.2.2 releases have made slight changes in the way statistics are reported for the OpenStack driver, as well as fixing some regressions for in-cluster configuration with the Kubernetes driver, and for gathering SSH host keys from slower nodes.
  • The 4.7.0 release of Zuul incorporates some improvements and new features. The status dashboard now links all completed jobs to a functional build result page even if their buildset has not yet been reported, and so several related configuration options are deprecated. The GitHub driver has support for reporting “skipped” and “neutral” states. You’ll also want to make sure to upgrade Nodepool first, as Zuul 4.7.0 needs Nodepool 4.2.0 or later.
