The University Partnership Program (UPP) is a targeted effort to encourage collaboration between the OpenInfra Foundation and universities and colleges all around the globe to get more students involved in open source and build up the pipeline of young professionals in open source.

How It Works: Models for Collaboration

Course

Some of the universities we work with offer courses to their students. These courses vary from university to university but generally they are one semester long and a group of students will focus on a single project for the entire course. The general focus of the courses range from UI/UX, to cloud computing, to project management.

Internship

Some universities have labs focused on open source where they already have students working but have downtime at work where they could take on other tasks. Other universities have career offices that run internships within the university where students can work on projects defined by professors. The OpenInfra Foundation collaborates with these professors to help mentor students to target the needs of the community.

Why is this beneficial?

Open Source Community Benefits

  • Building healthier, more resilient open source communities through diversity of background and skillset of the students entering the community as contributors.
  • Larger pipeline and funnel for companies to hire from for expertise in open source collaboration and knowledge.

Student Benefits

  • Honed communication skills for students as a result of collaboration with a global open-source community with a geographically distributed base of contributors.
  • Real-world development experience for students that isn’t done under an NDA or on proprietary software so they can share it in future interviews and on their resumes
