Join the people building and operating open infrastructure at the OpenStack Summit Vancouver in May. The Summit schedule features over 300 sessions organized by use cases including: artificial intelligence and machine learning, high performance computing, edge computing, network functions virtualization, container infrastructure and public, private and multi-cloud strategies.
Here we’re highlighting some of the sessions you’ll want to add to your schedule about edge computing.
Check out all the sessions, workshops and lightning talks focusing on edge here. And, if you’re interested in more about edge computing, read the new whitepaper created by the Edge Computing Group available at openstack.org/edge
Containers, bare-metal, VMs: Edge computing choices for workload flexibility
This panel features an all-star roster of experts including Verizon’s Beth Cohen, Ericsson’s Alison Randal, OPNFV’s Chris Price and the OSF’s Ildiko Vancsa. They’ll explore explore and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each of these technologies, coupled with a discussion of technology maturity and market forces involved in delivering the right platform for creating practical solutions to fit the application. Details here.
China Unicom case study in edge/cloud architecture
Jianfeng (JF) Ding, Intel, and China Unicom’s Dan Chen will present OpenStack based edge-cloud architecture, its hardware configuration, applications and the MEC design that they deployed for one of China’s leading telcos. The pair will also discuss the gaps of OpenStack for edge use cases and the needs for hardware accelerator devices (e.g. FPGA, GPU) as well as NFV requirements. Details here.
Security Considerations for cloud edge computing
Beth Cohen moderates a panel that will discuss how security must be incorporated into cloud edge architectures and some of the current best practices for doing it. She’ll be joined by Rob Hirschfeld CEO of RackN, Glen McGowan of Dell EMC and Shuquan Huang from 99cloud. Details here.
Future edge cloud for China Mobile
In this beginner-level talk, you’ll hear from China Mobile project manager Qiao Fu about the future nationwide network for China Mobile as well as the architecture, design and requirements for this edge cloud. She’ll also discuss issues that the telco is waiting for the open source communities to solve, including acceleration and container orchestration.
Details here.
Microclouds for fragmented markets: Getting OpenStack everywhere!
Benjamin Diaz and José Miguel Guzmán, both from Whitestack, offer this advanced-level talk about OpenStack Microclouds. The project aims to reduce entry costs and simplify the process of transitioning to cloud technologies for new clients by sharing geo-distributed controller nodes among multiple deployments. Using technologies like Ansible and Docker, they can present each client with an isolated and independent OpenStack deployment, making management of multiple deployments almost a trivial job. Details here.
OpenStack and Linux Foundation joint blueprint on edge computing
In this intermediate-level session, Gnanavelkandan Kathirvel, AT&T, and Melissa Evers-Hood, Intel, will share open-source based edge reference architecture that converges OpenStack and Linux Foundation communities to achieve the goals together without duplication of effort as the time, resources and funding are limited in the industry. Details here.
