In under 10 minutes an overview of DRaaS using open infrastructure.

In less time that it takes some people to reverse out of a parking lot, you can get started on a multi-cloud disaster recovery-as-a-service (DRaaS) using OpenStack Keystone Federation.

This video tutorial complete with jaunty music that presumably will keep people in disaster recovery mode upbeat lasts under seven minutes.

Disaster Recovery-as-a-Service (DRaaS) has been called a key business workload for the cloud; Keystone is an OpenStack service that provides API client authentication, service discovery, and distributed multi-tenant authorization by implementing OpenStack’s Identity API. It supports LDAP, OAuth, OpenID Connect, SAML and SQL.

The tutorial is the handiwork of student Shivangi Jadon supervised by faculty and research Associate Sudheendra Harwalkar at the Center for Cloud Computing and Big Data (CCBD) at PES University. It first gives an overview of federated cloud services framework architecture, a typical multi-cloud environment then offers a demo of DRaaS on multiple OpenStack clouds.

The main steps:

  • Create instance and volume in cloud-A
  • Instance and volume backup from cloud-A to cloud-C
  • Recovery in cloud-C
  • Recovery in cloud-B using backed-up snapshots in cloud-C
  • Remote cloud B instance and volume backup and recovery from cloud-A

The tutorial runs just six minutes and fifty-two seconds, that’s less than it takes most people to fall asleep or finish one of those trendy workouts.
