Who do you think should win the 2022 Superuser Awards? The annual Superuser Awards is to recognize organizations that have used open infrastructure to improve their business while contributing back to the community.

This year, the Superuser Awards winner will be announced at the OpenInfra Summit Berlin, June 7-9! Join the global community for its first in-person Summit in over two years and collaborate directly with the people building and running open source infrastructure using OpenStack, Kubernetes and 30+ other technologies. Get your Summit tickets before the price increases on May 17!

Zhejiang Expressway Co., Ltd. is one of the 11 nominees for the Superuser Awards 2022. Check out why its team getting nominated:

Who is the nominee?

IT Team, Zhejiang Expressway Co., Ltd.

How has open infrastructure transformed the organization’s business?

ArcherOS HCI is used to replace the deployment architecture based on physical servers, which increases the availability, performance and agility, while simplifying the operation management. Hundreds of distributed HCI systems are managed through a private cloud management platform to create an edge cloud covering the whole province, and the automation, resource lifecycle management and unified operation monitoring capabilities of the private cloud are brought to the operation and management practices.

How has the organization participated in or contributed to an open source project?

Cloud resource management: with the support of multiple hypervisors, cloud resource management can provide unified management and scheduling of a variety of virtual resources based on KVM, VMware, Xen, Hyper-V, etc., such as VMs, private network, public network, block storage, image, SDN (load balancing, firewall, router, VPN).

Heterogeneous resource management: the base resource platform can manage existing physical servers and heterogeneous storage centrally. Physical resources can be used as independent resources or can be incorporated into a virtual resource pool; storage devices that support the OpenStack standard interface will be managed centrally as the storage service.

High availability: automatic failover of VMs is provided.

What open source technologies does the organization use in its open infrastructure environment?

In this project, nearly 500 servers are integrated, and nearly 120 edge cloud computing sub-sites are built to provide services for nearly 1,000 VMs. In addition, a unified cloud management platform is built; various storage resources are consolidated to create a unified storage resource pool, which can serve nearly 180TB capacity.

What is the scale of your open infrastructure environment?

From the perspective of a number of users, the entire environment involves nearly 2,000 servers and nearly 500 edge cloud computing sub-sites. We use OpenStack, Ceph, KVM, etc.

What kind of operational challenges have you overcome during your experience with open infrastructure?

The main challenges include:

Application and data migration performance

Adapt to organizational structure and management system of users 3? Network scalability

How is this team innovating with open infrastructure?

Users are geographically distributed, thousands of branches are involved, and they have different management capabilities.

Unified cloud management platform: hierarchical architecture consisting of VDC, availability domain, and the project team is adopted, the operation and maintenance permissions are assigned independently to different user roles, so that different users can log in to the system to browse and process different operations. This accords with the working KPIs and job responsibilities of different user roles, and improves the security significantly.

The Superuser Editorial Advisory Board will review the nominees and determine the finalists and overall winner after the community has had a chance to review the nominees. Stay tuned!
