Coming to the Summit Tokyo? You’ll find Superuser organizers Nicole Martinelli and Allison Price there, along with a special print edition of Superuser.

We want to tell your stories, too, so email us and we’ll find time to meet!

Here’s the news from the OpenStack world you won’t want to miss — the musings, polemics and questions posed by the larger community.

In case you missed it

Celebrating diversity in the OpenStack community

“The world is getting smaller thanks to the Internet and now the cloud. In order to best serve this integrated global marketplace, we need people to bring different peoples’ knowledge, expertise, and collaborative spirit into our community. They should not just join our community, but be active contributors and leaders in our community. The needs and opportunities in the U.S. are different than the needs and opportunities in Brazil, which are different than the needs and opportunities in Turkey, etc.,” says Intel’s Carol Barrett in a roundtable that includes Egle Sigler and Kavit Munshi.

OpenStack Tokyo: We Can Hardly Contain Ourselves
At OpenStack Tokyo, we’ll be sharing our new container management service. Everyone is excited about the possibilities created by containerized management, and for good reason. Containers offer multiple benefits, including greatly improved application portability across development, test and production environments. But very few know how to architect, manage, and run a large container service, writes Van Lindberg on the Rackspace blog.

HP "sunsets" its public cloud – in the most obfuscating press release of the week:

A new model to deliver public cloud
“With these customer needs in mind, we have made the decision to double-down on our private and managed cloud capabilities…Therefore, we will sunset our HP Helion Public Cloud offering on January 31, 2016. As we have before, we will help our customers design, build and run the best cloud environments suited to their needs – based on their workloads and their business and industry requirements,” says the presser.

Thereby explaining the massive brain drain from HP. The latest departure:

IBM Snags OpenStack Expert from HP
Kyle Mestery joined IBM as distinguished engineer and director of open source networking. He recently held a similar position at HP.
Mestery says he left HP because, “This was really about a great opportunity within IBM. I’ll be building and leading a team focused on making OpenStack networking work at scale for IBM’s public and hybrid cloud products. We’ll be doing all this work upstream and feeding it back into the community, and it will encompass the entire open source networking stack from Neutron to Open vSwitch (OVS) to Open Virtual Networking (OVN).”

Oracle Puts OpenStack Into Docker Containers
“There are multiple advantages to having OpenStack packaged as Docker images, including improved visibility. Wim Coekaerts, senior vice president, Linux and Virtualization Engineering at Oracle, noted that pre-Docker, there would have been hundreds of python daemons installed and running, without breakdown and an adminstrator would have to do ps auxww and just see a maze of processes and know what’s running and what’s not running,” Sean Michael Kerner weighs in at Server Watch.

Iron.io Joins Cloud Foundry Foundation
From the press release: “Iron.io today announced that it is joining the Cloud Foundry Foundation, home of the industry standard Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS). As a Foundation member, Iron.io brings its job queuing, scheduling, and processing capabilities to the Cloud Foundry platform, providing developers a domain-specific environment for handling asynchronous workloads at scale within their applications. “

Solinea Raises $4M Series A To Help Business Deploy OpenStack Clouds
Deploying an OpenStack cloud is still anything but easy. Solinea helps enterprises design and deploy their private clouds, writes TechCrunch.

EMC spins out VMware cloud services and makes them part of Virtustream
VMware’s vCloud Air public cloud portfolio is becoming part of public cloud and cloud software provider Virtustream, which VMware acquired earlier this year.

For context, check out this from Barrons, “Fundamentals now take a back seat: All investor eyes are focused on the structure of this deal, free-falling VMware shares (tracking stock worth $9.10 as part of Dell offer), and how this nightmare situation might affect the nature of this historic deal.”

OpenStack Appliance Startup ZeroStack Raises $16M
The latest round was led by Formation 8 with contributions from existing investor Foundation Capital and a current member of the company’s board of directors, Mark Leslie…ZeroStack, which has 25 employees, was founded last year by Kiran Bondalapati, who was a founding engineer at Bromium, and Ajay Gulati, who was a senior architect and a R&D lead at VMware…ZeroStack has been deployed with with a major retailer, a company in the life sciences industry, a university, a local municipality, and a company in the software analytics space, writes Mike Robuck in SDX Central.
