Randall Sobie, a research scientist and professor within the Institute of Particle Physics at the University of Victoria, is working on initiatives like the ATLAS Experiment to better understand what makes up our universe.

These projects record a high volume of data, so they have built computing facilities specifically for managing the massive amounts of data around the world. In the past, they’ve used grid technologies, but have moved on to utilize cloud technologies such as OpenStack. Their goal is to use distributed cloud facilities in an integrated way so that users around the world can use them for their data analysis.

They’re still learning to use cloud technology within this distributed model, but Randall is confident that there is significant potential to simplify the process and make their resources more efficient and effective.
