A second wave of cloud adoption is on the rise. Are you ready?
OpenStack member Cisco sponsored a recent IDC report that found “second wave” of cloud adoption is emerging. The drivers of this new wave? "Businesses are now adopting cloud to achieve transformative and measurable business value." The report highlights that over half of respondents expect cloud — public, private, and hybrid — to allow them to allocate IT budget more strategically and believe cloud will help their company increase revenues.
Lest you think there are only sunny skies ahead for cloud technology, it’s worth keeping an eye on the transparency front, according to at least one industry pundit.
OpenStack: open source transparency among the clouds
"While the pre-cloud era enjoyed sunny weather for the open Internet – with wide use of free and transparent software such as Linux, Apache, MySQL and openly accessible programming languages such as PHP, Perl, Python, and Ruby – the arrival of closed source black box clouds (like Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure) have rained on open source’s parade and precipitated a push back against the transparency which developers, engineers, and IT organizations had enjoyed," writes DreamHost’s Jonathan LeCour in The Stack.
5 Reasons why you should learn OpenStack
Surprisingly, "Just do it for the money" is the final reason in this post from Ubuntu’s Alberto Suarez.

If VMware is a sun, here are the storage worlds we’ve spotted orbiting it
"Behold the storage sun king – VMware is the center of a storage solar system with planets and asteroids orbiting around it in belts: the EVO, VSAN, and VVOL orbital zones. Fresh activity has been detected by telescopes on planet Register using its snark-o-scope….Will OpenStack have a play here?" wonders cheeky tech publication The Register.
