Dozens of superusers will take the stage in Sydney to tell their stories about working with OpenStack. Hear these tales from the trenches as presenters detail the evaluation process, advantages and challenges encountered along the way. Monitoring the Nectar Research Cloud

Monday, November 6, 3:10 p.m.-3:50 p.m.

A large OpenStack cloud consists of many moving parts that all need to be operating correctly to ensure a working service for end users.

Andy Botting and Jake Yip, both of Nectar, will talk about how they got started with existing Open Source tools like Tempest, Nagios, Jenkins, Puppet, Ganglia and tied them together with some custom tools for a holistic view of the health of their systems. Starting from the load balancer at the top of the stack, through the control plane and down to the underlying hardware and then across the availability of all our individual services that Nectar provides for our users, they can be confident that their systems are operating correctly, but most importantly, can quickly identify where to look when things go bad.

A panel discussion between Ericsson, AT&T, SK Telecom & NTT on the topic of addressing the challenges faced when developing, testing, and deploying OpenStack based clouds to support telco workloads. The panel will touch on the realities of staffing for scale delivery, open source collaboration learnings, and challenges of evolving at a rapid pace with the latest cloud and NFV technologies.

Paddy Power Betfair’s journey to OpenStack Cloud – The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

Superuser award winners PaddyPower Betfair have migrated about 400 applications to their OpenStack cloud. In this talk, they’ll cover the organizational, cultural and technical challenges, the good decisions the bad decisions.

Government use of OpenStack in Australia

Tuesday, November 7, 5:50 p.m.-6:30 p.m.

Rupert Taylor-Price, CEO and founder of Vault Systems, will share his extensive knowledge of the use of OpenStack in the Australian Government. Vault leveraged the simplicity and openness provided by OpenStack to build one of the world’s most secure cloud platforms exclusively for use by the Australian Government. Vault is only one of two companies globally to gain Australian Signals Directorate certification for the storage and processing of classified data.

Taylor-Price will share his experiences in working with major Government Departments, including the Digital Transformation Agency, Department of Health, Defense and Australian intelligence community. He will discuss how Government has benefited from the use of OpenStack to deliver digital services and solutions across a robust and secure platform. Taylor-Price will also provide insights on how Government policies currently being developed will shape the cloud services industry over the next two-three years and what this means for OpenStack.

Standing Up and Operating a Container Service on top of OpenStack Using OpenShift

Wednesday November 8 , 1:50 p.m.-2:30 p.m.

Massachusetts Open Cloud offers virtual machine based IaaS services on top of OpenStack. They recently started offering containers as a service using OpenShift by tightly integrating it with the OpenStack services. Our deployment uses Keystone to authenticate users, Swift to host the Docker registry and Cinder to automatically provision persistent volumes for containers. They use the OpenShift Console to expose an OpenStack cluster to container users in a generic way where they have access to compute, networking, and storage. By coupling container and VM users they’re able to achieve a higher density in cluster usage. The presenters (Ata Turk, MOC Research Scientist, Dan McPherson, Red Hat, Robert Baron, Boston University) will present their architecture, the challenges faced while setting up this service, best practices for offering a reliable service, and the experiences of the first large-scale user of our service, a medical imaging service on the cloud.
