Talks on Kubernetes, security and best practices will keep you moving at the OpenStack Summit Boston.

These 15-minute talks during the OpenStack Summit range in topics from Kubernetes, security and how to get involved with the community.

The talks — you can find a list of them in the schedule here — are chosen by the same track chairs who decide what goes into longer sessions. They take place on the second level of the Hynes Convention Center — in the Foundation Lounge area (see map below), also a great place to chat with staffers from the OpenStack Foundation, too.

Superuser talked to speakers about SaltStack, tenant care and authors of the new book “OpenStack for Architects” to give you an idea of what to expect.

OpenStack, Kubernetes and SaltStack for Complete Deployment Automation

Tuesday May 9 , 2:30 p.m.

Aleš Komárek, former SaltStack project team lead (PTL), will be giving this advanced-level talk with Thomas Lichtenstein.

What will people get out of the 10-minute talk?

I’ll show the scope of the SaltStack project, how it can help to streamline deployments and basically life cycle management for many kind of resources resources – software and hardware. We’ll show how to deploy OpenStack and load on top of it, same for the Kubernetes cluster and as well as some ‘home’ virtualization as (Virtualbox, VMware) etc.

Will you be doing a demo and if so, what will it show?

I don’t think there’ll be much time for full demo, but I’ll show configurations and sample usage to govern clouds, VMs, containers — individual bits and pieces, not continuous demo/recording.

Saving one cloud at a time with tenant care

Thursday May 11, 11:30 a.m

Speaker Bryan Langston of Mirantis will give a beginner-level talk about why the focus on user experience, or tenant care has been lacking, and is a common barrier to broader end user adoption.

What’s the big takeaway?

The main message is “the success of your cloud depends on how well you take care of your tenants.” To support this message, I will outline several practices that cause tenants to leave and I will highlight several best practices and recommendations to avoid repeating prior failures.

Who reads books anymore? Or writes them?

Thursday May 11 , 2:00 p.m.

Michael Solberg and Ben Silverman wrote “OpenStack for Architects” and they’ll offer essential tips on everything from chosing a topic to working with a publisher, as well as copies of the book on a first-come, first-served basis.

What’s the one thing people should keep in mind when taking on a project like this?

“Writing a book is a huge effort – collaboration makes the work much easier and a lot more fun!” Solberg says

Will you do it again, why or why not?

Absolutely – Ben Silverman and I are going to use the upcoming summit to do some planning on the second edition of our book.

How to contribute to Superuser

And if you’d like to contribute to Superuser by writing an original use case or tutorial — aside from the glory, you’ll also qualify for AUC status — catch Allison Price and Nicole Martinelli speaking on Tuesday, May 9 at 1:25 p.m.

The lightning talks happen on the second level of the Hynes Convention Center — in the Foundation Lounge area (see map below), also a great place to chat with staffers from the OpenStack Foundation, too.
