To smash barriers to OpenStack adoption, the Product Working Group has gathered a number of user stories.

They’re based on specific needs of special interests groups working as a part of the User Committee, says Carol Barrett director of enterprise platform marketing at Intel Corporation, and one of the locomotives behind both the Product Working Group and the Enterprise Working Group.

Offering a peek in to the mind of OpenStack technical leaders, this first batch of user stories published will be most useful to operators and enterprise IT managers, Barrett says, adding that end-users will benefit too, sometimes directly (new capability) sometimes indirectly (easier upgrades means faster access to new service capabilities.)

This trove of information focuses on what the user wants using a format that captures an actor/role, objective and benefit/reasoning. Items are further broken down into more-detailed tasks or features that describe the specific work that must be done.

Where do these first stories come from? "Essentially, the community members who are bringing the voice of the markets into the OpenStack Service development," Barrett says. There are three main sources: product managers who are part of the Product Work Group, the Enterprise Work Group and the Telco Work Group.

How to get involved

If you want to help out, you can join the Product Working Group, the Enterprise Working Group, or go to the user story git repo and make comments to improve user stories or even add one they develop to the repo (there’s a template and readme file in the repo to help people do this).

What gaps are there to fill in user stories right now? Barrett says the ones most needed are those that "represent the largest gaps or barriers to adoption."
