OpenStack & OVS: From Love-Hate Relationship to Match Made in Heaven
"How can we change the dynamics of this relationship from bitter love to harmonic happily-ever-after? The answer is to offload certain packet forwarding tasks from OVS to the NIC hardware, but without sacrificing network programmability," writes Chloe Jian Ma, senior director, cloud market development at Mellanox Technologies in networking blog Light Reading.

CoreOS brings Kubernetes to AWS with Tectonic platform
Tectonic, announced earlier this year, is being developed as a commercial implementation of Kubernetes, Google’s framework for orchestrating and connecting collections of containers to form a scalable, distributed application. Although still currently in preview, CoreOS is offering organisations the chance to try Tectonic running on AWS, claiming that it makes it easier to run Kubernetes on Amazon’s cloud platform.
HP goes after Cisco, Arista with open source OS
Managing editor @Jim_Duffy covers the OpenSwitch announcement HP is spearheading multivendor development of an open source network operating system for data centers in an effort to address scale, dynamic operation and vendor independence.
IBM to acquire Cleversafe for hybrid cloud storage
"This is the latest in a string of cloudy acquisitions for Big Blue, which is moving fast to build up its cloud portfolio to better compete against rivals including Amazon AMZN 1.79% Web Services and more directly with Microsoft MSFT 2.50% and others preaching the hybrid cloud religion. Other IBM acquisitions in cloud include SoftLayer, Cloudant, and Blue Box," says Barb Darrow at Fortune.
Rackspace turns into a fanatical AWS cloud-flinger
“While this might mean more choice in AWS support, it’s a further blow to the OpenStack dream Rackspace committed itself to in 2010. In the years since, Rackspace’s aspirations as a major cloud platform provider founded on OpenStack have failed to materialise at any sort of scale," opines the Register’s Gavin Clarke.
What does this mean for you? Maybe even better job prospects, if you agree with this post from Mirantis:
“The pair plans to recruit and train “hundreds” of open source developers to work on strengthening OpenStack,” Nick Chase wrote in OpenStack:Now. “The plan is to build out an OpenStack developer cloud that consists of two 1,000 node clusters available for use by anyone in the OpenStack community for scaling, performance, and code testing. Rackspace plans to have the cloud available within the next six months.”
Can AWS break the lock-in mold set by legacy tech giants?
"Even ardent AWS users, thousands of which are at AWS Re:Invent this week, do not want to repeat past mistakes of dedicating too much of their IT budget to one vendor," says Barb Darrow at Fortune.
